We have been discovering new ways to add and subtract during our Number Talks. Students solve the problem on the board in their head using as many different strategies as possible. After some think time, students explain HOW they solved the problem using mathematical language.
After we have several strategies are shared, everyone identifies 2-3 strategies they are comfortable applying to the problems they work through that day.
Number Talks help us discover new strategies, improve our mental math skills and challenge us to explain our thinking thoroughly.
